In-Class Learnings

Our first class in my masters program at MICA for UX Design was the Foundation of UX Research. The first assignment for this class involved drafting research plan, because it was taught to us that good design comes from good research.

Assignment Task

My research plan involved picking an existing product and identifying the following as per our rubric:

  • Client name

  • The product and feature to be researched

  • Objective and goals

  • Problem statement

  • Two user types aligned with the problem

For this assignment and throughout class, I chose YouTube as the focus of my studies.

Our instructor stated our assignment should be as close to real life as possible meaning I had to consider:

  • Budget of the business

  • Timeframe

  • If the company WOULD perform the research plan.

What was a difficulty I faced?

At the time, I had my problem statement was too broad and I wasn't able to refine it until I conducted user interviews. After interviewing users later in the class, I discovered that biases were influenced by YouTube's UI.

Personal UX Designer takeaway

I learned that my research plan methodology is good for discovering and identifying problems - which is performed mostly in startup companies.

As I progressed later into the courses, I found better methods of finding and creating problem statements such as: heuristic analysis, cognitive walkthroughs, or creating affinity diagrams through user reviews.
